A LITTLE WORD KNOW-HOW
Homophones in Word Puzzles: Same Sound, Different Meaning
Use meaning and crossing letters to distinguish words that sound alike.
Read for meaning
Homophones sound alike but can have different spellings and meanings. SEA and SEE illustrate the distinction: one is a body of salt water and the other concerns vision. A sound alone does not choose the spelling.
Use the puzzle structure
In a crossword, the clue meaning and crossing letters decide which form fits. In a spelling task, read the surrounding sentence. If the sentence describes looking, SEE is the useful choice.
Make a contrast pair
Practice the words in short sentences that force their meanings apart: “I can see the sea.” This keeps the spelling connected to a concrete use rather than an isolated sound.
