A LITTLE WORD KNOW-HOW
Choosing a Word Bank for a Classroom Puzzle
Keep vocabulary relevant, instructions clear and the puzzle appropriate to its audience.
Choose a learning purpose
A puzzle works better when the words share a lesson or topic. Match the vocabulary to what learners have actually encountered. A decorative theme does not by itself create an instructional benefit.
Check spelling and forms
Decide whether the exercise needs singular forms, plurals or a specific regional spelling. Review each entry before generation. Do not let the generator silently decide which intended terms matter.
Provide the right support
Give a word bank for a search, a clue when a scramble has several possible answers, and a separate key for checking. Adjust grid size and directions to the task rather than relying on an age label alone.
