A LITTLE WORD KNOW-HOW
Writing Crossword Clues for Your Own Puzzle
Write clear clues, handle alternate answers and inspect the generated layout.
Start with a clear relationship
A clue should point toward the intended word through a meaning, fact or wordplay you can explain. “A place to borrow books” is a clearer clue for LIBRARY than an unrelated sentence containing the word.
Watch ambiguity
Some clues have many possible answers. A length and crossing letters can make the intended choice fair. Check spelling and the singular or plural form before generating the grid.
Review connections and omissions
A connected crossword depends on shared letters and the available space. The maker reports entries that did not fit. Edit and regenerate rather than presenting an incomplete layout as though every answer was included.
