A LITTLE WORD KNOW-HOW

How to Make a Word Search That Includes Your Words

Choose a word bank and grid, inspect omissions and print a matching answer key.

Choose a focused bank

A shared topic gives a puzzle a useful identity. For a garden puzzle, words such as ROSE, LEAF, SEED and SOIL fit together. Remove accidental duplicates and keep the spelling consistent.

Match size to the task

A small grid can be easier to scan but may not fit a long word. Limit directions for a simpler puzzle. The maker reports words that could not be placed; increase the grid or adjust the bank before treating it as finished.

Inspect before printing

Read the placed-word report and preview. Print the worksheet and its key from the same accepted revision. Editing a word changes the puzzle and requires a new key.
