A LITTLE WORD KNOW-HOW

Connections-Style Puzzles: Test a Whole Group

Look for a specific shared relationship and keep ambiguous words available.

Find a precise relationship

A group should share a clear idea, not merely feel loosely related. Try naming the relationship before committing. A precise label makes it easier to test each candidate against the same rule.

Keep ambiguous words flexible

One word can fit more than one possible theme. Set it aside while you identify a stronger group elsewhere. Solving a confident group can reduce the ambiguity of the remaining set.

Avoid forcing the fourth member

Three convincing words do not prove the fourth belongs. Ask whether it matches the same meaning or whether you have quietly changed the rule. A hint is most useful when it helps you see the relationship rather than simply listing the answers.
