A LITTLE WORD KNOW-HOW

How to Play Cryptogram: Rules & Worked Tips

A quick guide to playing our cryptogram game, whether you want a quiet practice round or a counted daily result.

Start with the rules

Each printed cipher letter stands for one decoded letter throughout the sentence. Select a cipher letter and enter your proposed replacement. Matching occurrences update together. Two different cipher letters cannot decode to the same letter in our substitution puzzle.

Try a useful approach

Begin with structure: repeated words, one-letter words and common short words. A three-letter word could be THE, but that is a hypothesis. Check whether its proposed letters make sense elsewhere before building the rest of the sentence around it.

Understand your result

Submit when you want to finalize your decoded sentence. Correct letter positions determine the score. Optional solution reveal is free and marks the result assisted. Our launch sentences are original puzzle text, not quotations attributed to famous people.
